En Ibarra se dice de dos grandes amigos, Manuel y Carlos, a los cuales cierto día se les fue encomendado, por don Martín (papa de Carlos), un encargo el cual consistía en que llegasen hasta cierto potrero, sacasen agua de la acequia, y regasen la sementería de papas de la familia, la cual estaba a punto de echarse a perder. Ya en la noche, muy noche, se les podía encontrar a los dos caminando entre los oscuros callejones, donde a medida que avanzaban, se escuchaba cada vez más intensamente el escalofriante "tararán-tararán". Con los nervios de punta, decidieron ocultarse tras la pared de una casa abandonada, desde donde vivieron una escena que cambiaría sus vidas para siempre...
Unos cuerpos flotantes encapuchados, con velas largas apagadas, cruzaron el lugar llevando una carroza montada por un ser temible de curvos cuernos, afilados dientes de lobo, y unos ojos de serpiente que inquietaban hasta el alma del más valiente. Siguiéndole, se lo podía ver a un individuo de blanco semblante, casi transparente, que tocaba una especie de tambor, del cual venía el escuchado "tararán-tararán".
He aquí el horror, recordando ciertas historias contadas de boca de sus abuelitos y abuelitas, reconocieron el tambor que llevaba aquel ser blanquecino, era nada más ni nada menos que la legendaria caja ronca.
Al ver este objeto tan nombrado por sus abuelos, los dos amigos, muertos de miedo, se desplomaron al instante. Minutos después, llenos de horror, Carlos y Manuel despertaron, mas la pesadilla no había llegado a su fin. Llevaban consigo, cogidos de la mano, una vela de aquellas que sostenían los seres encapuchados, solo que no eran simples velas, para que no se olvidasen de aquel sueño de horror, dichas velas eran huesos fríos de muerto. Un llanto de desesperación despertó a los pocos vecinos del lugar. En aquel oscuro lugar, encontraron a los dos temblando de pies a cabeza murmurando ciertas palabras inentendibles, las que cesaron después de que las familias Domínguez y Guanoluisa (los vecinos), hicieron todo intento por calmarlos.
Después de ciertas discusiones entre dichas familias, los jóvenes regresaron a casa de don Martín al que le contaron lo ocurrido. Por supuesto, Martín no les creyó ni una palabra, tachándoles así de vagos.
Después del incidente, nunca se volvió a oír el "tararán-tararán" entre las calles de Ibarra, pero la marca de aquella noche de terror, nunca se borrara en Manuel ni en Carlos. Ojala así aprendan a no volver a rondar en la oscuridad a esas horas de la noche.
